JOURNAL: Tulum, Mexico- Day Trip

TULUM, MEXICO

Not only does Tulum have breathtaking white sandy beaches, emerald green waters and sun shiny breeze to sway the beautiful palm trees, it is also filled with such rich history and culture.

Tulum has some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico situated around dramatic Mayan Ruins. You can walk the ruins and take in the rich history, visit caves, do some cavern diving, fishing or just enjoy the town center shopping and the beach and sand.

The lodgings and restaurants in Tulum are fairly reasonable, although I did not over night in Tulum, most of the tourists I spoke to while on my day trip to Tulum were staying in the area and raved about how budget friendly everything was for them. I also did some research and checked the rates for hotels nearby and they are indeed reasonable, should you want to spend more than a day trip perusing Tulum. Note though, that the areas that are most reasonable are situated near the highway and near the town center.

MAYAN RUINS

From what I observed during my visit to Tulum, it appears that the Tulum Ruins is one of the most popular spots. Although it was overcast skies and torrential downpour the day I visited, it was still fairly crowded with tourists from all over the world. These Mayan Ruins are a great archaeological site along the Rivera Maya, with breathtaking views off the rocky coastline.

These ruins sit over the sea atop a small cliff which upholds a dramatic scenery once you reach the edge. Just be careful though, as it’s quite breezy and can be slippery at the top of the cliff, even when it’s not raining.

While on your trip to Tulum, be sure to bring a hat, wear sneakers and your swimsuit so you can also head below to the beaches to enjoy some swimming as most of the waters are fairly calm.

The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an entrance fee of 95 pesos, should you wish to explore on your own. Provided you want more of a guided tour, that cost is extra and there are plenty of guides waiting near the entrance that could assist you.

So, if you are ever in the Cancun or Playa Del Carmen area, go ahead and hop in a taxi/car and take that drive to Tulum, it’s definitely worth it.
