JOURNAL: A Relaxing Week In Freeport, Bahamas

Freeport in Grand Bahama Island is one of the closer Bahamian islands to the US and a quick 45 minute flight from Fort Lauderdale. It is a very popular destination for cruise lines because of its close proximity to the US and the fact that the US dollar is still widely accepted.

There are two main clusters of hotels and resorts on Grand Bahama Island. One is at the Port Lucaya area located on the south shore of island and the other is near downtown Freeport which is more inland. There are also other individual resorts scattered around the west and south shores of the island.

We chose to stay in Port Lucaya at a hotel called the Lighthouse. Once we arrived at the airport the weather was warm with a slight breeze as we waited for our taxi to take us to the hotel. The drive was just about 15 minutes away and although we arrived a few hours before hotel check in, we were able to have them hold our luggage and grab a drink at the bar and check out some of the property. Once checked in we were pleased with the ocean view room and how pleasant the staff treated us. We got freshened up and decided to go walk around and then grab an early dinner.

The Lighthouse is an all inclusive resort that is nestled on the beach that is within a few minutes walk to Port Lucaya Marketplace. We walked around and perused the many shops and stands and had a few drinks at various bars before we headed back to have dinner on site at the Lighthouse. The resort has a golf course, full service spa and four onsite restaurants as well as access to two other restaurants near the port that is part of the package. During our stay we dined at each of the restaurants, multiple times and all of them were divine!

The remainder of our stay we enjoyed the wonderful amenities the resort had to offer such as kayaking, jet skiing, sailing and snorkeling. We also took the bus into the town one day for shopping and a day tour around the island. We also spent alot of time relaxing on the beach and in the infinity pools, or playing volleyball with other guests.

On the island you can also enjoy some scuba diving, swimming with dolphins and deep sea fishing, but we didn’t try those options this time around.  Freeport also has some great weather and such beautiful sunrises and sunsets and we were able to take in quite a few on the beach.

So if you are ever looking to plan a quick beach getaway and you live on the East Coast/South in the U.S. you definitely should check out Freeport as it was a beautiful and relaxing locale that we absolutely plan to visit again!
